Another of the popular long-running daytime serial dramas was Road of Life. It was first heard in the Chicago area in June of 1937, and began airing over thirty-seven stations of the NBC Red network on September 13, 1937. It was also broadcast over twenty-five CBS stations beginning on January 3, 1938.

During its long radio run the sponsor was Procter and Gamble. The story was set in the world of medicine and revolved around the career of Dr. Jim "Butch" Brent. When the series began Dr. Brent was a mere intern, but over the years the drama chronicled the rise in his career, along with his stormy love life.

Dr. Brent was played by Matt Crowley, David Ellis, Ken Griffin, Don McLaughlin, and Howard Teichmann. The latter was a also a famous playwright who scripted this series. During the twenty-one seasons on the air, Road of Life took many twists and turns, employing dozens of actors in as many diverse roles. Some of the more familiar radio voices that traveled the road included: Peggy Allenby, Muriel Bremner, Leo Curley, Elspeth Eric, Louise Fitch, Barbara Fuller, Betty Lou Gerson, Percy Hemus, Charlotte Manson, Marvin Miller, Bret Morrison, George Petrie, Marion Shockley, Hugh Studebaker, Hope Sum-mers, Viki Vola, Willard Waterman, Sarajane Wells, Betty Winkler, Lesley Woods, and Lawson Zerbe. Angel Casey and Jeanette Dowling were assigned the role of a nurse paging Dr. Brent to surgery at the opening of every episode.

The announcers were George Bryan, Clayton Collyer, Dan Donalson, Ralph Edwards, James Fleming, Dick Joy, and Stuart Metz. The organists were Bill Meeder and Charles Paul.

Road of Life remained mostly an NBC network series, but on and off it was carried jointly by NBC and CBS. In 1954 Road of Life began airing exclusively over CBS, where it continued until the final episode was broadcast on January 2, 1959.
